Lébadée

Lébadée is a town of Béotie, located close to the western border of Béotie, between the Hélicon mount and the ancient city of Chéronée.

History

In the zone, on the council of an Athenian named Lébade, the inhabitants of the Homeric city of Midée (Μίδεια) transplanted themselves in the plain and founded Lébadée (Pausanias 9,39). The city gained in importance because of the oracle of Trophonios which was consulted by Crésus and Mardonios, and which was last oracle to be consulted in Béotie.

In the war against Persée of Macedonia it was favorable to Rome while Thèbes, Haliarte and Coronée took part of Macedonia. The city was plundered twice, once by Lysandre and another time by general Archélas of Mithridate VI Eupatre.

Under the Othoman domination it was capital of a sandjak.
