Längelmäki

Längelmäki is a old municipality south-west of the Finland. It is located in the area Pirkanmaa.

The small forest commune is wedged between the industrial towns of Pirkanmaa like Finland-Power station. It rather poor, little is populated and fights against a rate of Chômage higher than 14%. In 50 years its population dropped by 62%, one of the strongest rate of the country (4 325 inhabitants in 1957). The commune hardly becomes animated but in summer, when the 1.900 houses of holidays fill of Finnish fleeing the big cities.

In front of the difficulties of the municipality of financing the welfare expenditures and of health for a growing old population, it agreed to disappear, not while amalgamating with only one commune as it is generally the rule but while being divided between the towns of Orivesi and Jämsä, located in two different areas. Fusion is effective since January 1st 2007, 64% of the population including the administrative center being attached to Jämsä and the remainder with Orivesi.

The administrative center, crossed by main road 9 (E63), is at 25 km of center town of Orivesi, 26 of Jämsä, 60 of Tampere and 80 of Jyväskylä. It is located at the end is large lake Längelmävesi.

The common neighbors, in addition to Jämsä with the North-East and Orivesi in south-west, are Kuhmalahti in the south, Juupajoki in the west and Kuhmoinen in the east (in Finland-Power station).
