Kythnos

Kythnos is an island of the Western Cyclades, between Kéa and Sérifos, located at 52 marine miles of the Pirée. It has a surface of 99 km ² for a littoral of 97 km. In 1995, it counts about 1500 inhabitants.

Mythology

The first inhabitants of the island would have been the Dryopes whose first king would have been called Kythnos.

History

Kythnos provides two ships at the time of the Bataille of Salamine then was member of the Ligue of Délos.

Geography

Economy

Since the Second world war, the iron mines, main resource of the island, are exhausted. The saving in Kythnos had to be reconverted towards agriculture and fishing.
