Kwame Nkrumah (September 21st 1909 with Nkroful, Ghana - April 27th 1972 with Bucharest, Romania) is an independence politician and Ghanaian side-Africanist which directs the Ghana independent as a Prime Minister of 1957 to 1960 then as a President of 1960 to 1966.

Beginnings in policy

It makes its studies in England and with the the United States of America. In 1945, it took part in the organization of the Panafrican Congress. It turns over in Coast-with-the Or in 1947 and becomes general secretary of the independence party, the UGCC (United Gold Coast Convention). It leaves the UGCC to found another party: convention People' S party (CP).

Wishing independence, Nkrumah calls with the Boycott and the civil Désobéissance, which was worth to him to be imprisoned by the British authorities until in 1951.

Prime Minister for the local government

This same year, the British authorities organize legislative elections which are gained by the CP. Nkrumah, released, is then named Prime Minister and narrowly collaborates with the British authorities. Basing itself on the policy of “Africanization of the administration, panafricanism and anticommunism” and that of health record true progress.

The father of independence

After the legislative elections of 1956, the CP gains the three quarters of the seats. Nkrumah, extremely of its success, obliges the United Kingdom then to concede the independence, which is proclaimed the March 6th 1957. While remaining in the the Commonwealth, Ghana de Nkrumah becomes, on July 1st 1960, a republic.

In 1958, it is the first to give its support for the Guinea independent of Sékou Touré, by granting to him a loan of ten million pounds sterling.

In March 1963, it takes an active part in the drafting of the charter of the Organization of African Unity, even if its idea to create a African central government is not retained., no project of industrialization is not clearly defined. But it is only as from October 1961, after a two months round (July-August) in the countries of the Eastern bloc, that Nkrumah directs really Ghana towards a Dictature.

Indeed, in September is organized strikes which, while asserting rises of wages, also express their opposition to the mode. Nkrumah represses them pitilessly

Adoption of socialism

In 1963, it restricts the independence of the judicial power and sets up, on January 26th, 1964, the monopartism with the CP, thus instituting a dictatorship of sole party. Then the same year, proclaims life president.
