Kwaïdan is a Japanese science fiction film of Masaki Kobayashi left in 1965.

The film is composed of four episodes:

Each episode tells a history of Fantôme S, resulting from the traditional folklore Japanese and adapted collection that made Lafcadio Hearn of it.

The too long film judged to be exploited in room was shortened, and the second tale ( the Woman of snows ) was removed version put in circulation.

Synopsis

  • the black Hair : a samurai gives up his wife by dislike of poverty, and leaves to marry with the girl of a rich person family to obtain the richness. But he does not love his new wife and is haunted by the memory of the first.

  • the Woman of snows : two loggers are taken in a snowstorm. They find a refuge, but arrives a strange woman who of keep silent one of her icy breath. She saves the other, which will keep the life as a long time as he will not tell what it spent this night there.

  • Hoïchi without ears : a young blind man collected by monks close to bay of DaN-No-ura, goes away each night to follow a strange warrior and to sing with the Master of this one the epopee of the battle which proceeded in bay a few centuries earlier.

  • In a bowl of the : a writer retranscribes a history where a samurai sees floating in his bowl of the face of an young man narquois. To drive out this vision it swallows the. But soon, the young person-man remakes his appearance.

Around film

  • the battle described in the third history ( Hoïchi without ears ) is the Bataille of DaN-No-ura (1185). She was held during the last phase of the Guerre of Gempei and opposed Taira No Kiyomori and Minamoto No Yoritomo. The epopee which tale the player of Luth (more precisely of biwa) names Heike Monogatari.
