Kuusamo

Kuusamo is a city north of the Finland, in the area of Ostrobotnie of North and the under-area of the Koillismaa.

Geography

Kuusamo is in the middle of the Finnish Lapland. The town of Kuusamo is located at the center of a very wide commune, bordered in the east by a very long border with the Russia, which counts a small border post. 1.700 km ² were yielded besides to the the USSR in 1940 following the Guerre of Winter, at the same time as the essence of the commune of Salla.

Of 2000 with 2004, it was more the big city of the country (by the surface). Détrônée by Pudasjärvi then by Rovaniemi, it is today the third town of Finland by the surface.

The area of Kuusamo is characteristic of a landscape of Taïga. It is besides geographically the landscape of Taïga which is located more at the west of the continent eurasiatic. The ground is broken and counts many lakes, most important being the lakes Yli-Kitka and Went-Kitka.

With less than 4 inhabitants to the km ², this white desert is a populated natural sanctuary of bear, dashes, reindeers, of Lynx and wolves. In Kuusamo, the annual average temperature is of 0°C.

Most of the national park of Oulanka is on the commune. The valley Oulankajoki is classified national landscape.

Side Kainuu, Suomussalmi in the south
Lastly, Taivalkoski in the west in Ostrobotnie of North

Economy

The city draws an increasing part of its incomes from tourism. It counts more than 6.000 houses of holidays and two tourist seasons:

the summer and the beginning of the autumn (July at mid-September), time of the excursions in the National park of Oulanka and on the Circuit of the bear (Karhunkierros), the way of the great most famous excursion of the country.
the winter (December-April), centered around the ski station of Ruka, one of most important of the country. One finds out of Ruka of many tracks arranged for the ski touring on all the territory of the municipality.

Transport

No line of train reaches Kuusamo. In fact, to cover the important distance from the cities of the South, the plane is an average privileged person. The airport is 11th country, indicator to pass a little more than 100.000 annual travellers (2005). In addition to the inevitable connections Finnair on Helsinki, it also accommodates charters in winter.

Kuusamo is well connected by road way but suffers nevertheless from its distant position. It is located at the junction of main road 20 arrival of Oulu and of main road 5 (E63), come from Helsinki via Kuopio and Kajaani and continuing towards the Lapland.
