Kushanku

Kushanku ( Kosokan , Kwang Shang Fu , Kosokun ) was the name of an expert of the Martial arts, who came to Okinawa (Naha) in 1761 as an ambassador from the Chinese empire Ming.

Kata

China and Okinawa had at the time of close economic links between them, so that the emperor sent to Fujian (province of China) various families of craftsmen.

The pupils of Kushanku were Chatan Yara (Kitayara) as well as the large Master " Tode" Sakugawa. Both learned a kata which later bore its name.

Each one of these two pupils had a vision and an interpretation different from the kata which developed with the wire of time to give two versions different of Kushanku.

Sakugawa No Kushanku

It is directly originating in Kushanku. The many subtle attacks at the vital points were to replace the elementary techniques. He taught this kata with his three students including inter alia Sokon Matsumura; others being Yastutsune Azato and Anko Itosu. It was under the hand Itosu to then undergo the first most important modifications.

Itosu No Kushanku

Itosu modified many katas and consequently did of this kata several. Of original Kushanku, it developed 3 other forms of the kata: Kushanku-Dai, Kushanku-Sho and Shio-Kushanku. Using these katas like basic katas, it derived from them the current Pinan and consequently the katas Heian.

Chatanyara No Kushanku

Chatan Yara, being of Chinese origin, included/understood the subtle techniques considerably best than Sakugawa had by modified incomprehension and individual interpretation. It left the kata such as it is and taught it with its students under the name of Chotuku Kyan. Kusanku de Chotoku Kyan arrived to us thanks to Joen Nakazato (Shorinji ryu) and Zenryo Shimabukuro.

Kuniyoshi No Kushanku

This form of the kata is without question the least faded alternative of Chatanyara that this last taught under the name of Chotuku Kyan. Chotuku Kyan is used consequently occasion as bond between the two lines Uchi deshi.

Chibana No Kushanku

This version is currently exclusively practiced in Kobayashi-ryu and a little in Shito-ryu. Chosin Chibana left the approach of origin of Itosu and besides learned it also from this one, concentrating however rather on Kushanku-Sho. Currently, he is taught inter alia by Yuchoku Higa.

Kanku Dai (Kosokun Dai)

In the Years 1930, Gichin Funakoshi modified the noun Kushanku in Kanku . They were Funakoshi and Kenwa Mabuni which diffused respectively the Shotokan and the Shito-ryu.

Kanku Sho (Kosokun Sho)
