Kuršumlija

Kuršumlija , in Serb Cyrillic Sr Куршумлија, is a city and a municipality of Serbia located in the district of Toplica. In 2002, the city counted 13.639 inhabitants and the municipality of which it is center 21.608.

History

With the site of current Kuršumlija, as of IIIe front century J.C a Roman camp called was “AD fines”. The city still keeps vestiges of churches going back to the Byzantine time. It is at this place that developed the medieval Serb State, at the time when Stefan Nemanja, founder of the dynasty of the Nemanjić built its residence there.

After the Othoman invasion of the 14th century, the Turks gave his name to the city.

Some personalities related to Kuršumlija

Of 1166 with 1172, the prince Stefan Nemanja establishes its first capital with Kuršumlija. The city is then called Bele Crkve (white churches).

The sultana Mara, girl of the despot Đurađ Brancović, later woman of Murad II and mother-in-law of the sultan Mehmed II, passed there the end of his life as nun to the monastery of the Holy Mother of God.

Kosta Pećanac, a soldier having played a notable part in the First and the Second world war was born to with it.

Dragoljub Mićunović, born in 1930, professor of philosophy at the University of Belgrade, was a famous dissident of the communist period. He became the first president of the Democratic party of Serbia. He was the first president of the Parliament of Serbia-Montenegro.
