Kuortane

Kuortane is a municipality west of the Finland, in the province of Western Finland and the area of Ostrobotnie of the South.

The site is inhabited since 8.500 year old meadows. At that time, the coast of future the the Baltic crosses what is Kuortane today. The first mention of the place goes back to 1557. The parish experiences a strong development at the 17th century with the rise of the production of vegetable Goudron, used in naval construction. One finds there at the 18th century more than 300 pits with tar which generate considerable incomes.

It is the municipality of birth of Alvar Aalto.

The commune, formed of 11 villages, is of intermediate size on the scale of Finland. It largely plane and is crossed by the river Lapuanjoki.

The common neighbors are Lapua in the North-West, Alajärvi in the North-East, Lehtimäki in the east, Töysä in south-east, Alavus in the south and Nurmo in the west.
