Kunoy

Kunoy /(literally: island of the Women ) is one of the eighteen islands of the archipelago of the Féroé.

  • Surface: 35,5 km ² (Row 8)

  • Inhabitants: 134 (Row 11, at December 31st, 2002)
  • Höchster Berg: Kúvingafjall , 830 m
  • Many tops: 11
  • Villages: Kunoy (64 hab.) and Haraldssund (70 hab.)

The village of Kunoy is located on the west coast of the island éponyme. Since 1988 a tunnel connects it to the village Haraldssund on the east coast.

There exists also an abandoned village: Skarð on the east coast. It was abandoned in 1913 after seven men, i.e. the whole of the male population of the village except a septagénaire and a fourteen year old teenager, perished at sea. A famous inhabitant of this village was front Símun Skarði (1872 - 1942) considered as an important pedagog in the archipelago, before it composes the national anthem.

The legend tells that the layers of Basalte located on the slope of a top of the island kept the print of the boards of the Arche of Noah who would have unloaded here. Obviously, one found no board which could have come to confirm this theory.

Transport

Kunoy, by the means of Haraldssund, is connected by a roadway with the island of Borðoy. The line of bus 504 offers regular connections on the way Klaksvík - Ánir - Haraldssund-Kunoy (Village).
