Ksar Ghilane

Ksar Ghilane is a Oasis south of the Tunisia located on the limit is Grand Eastern Erg.

It is famous being southernmost of the Tunisian oases and one of the doors of the Désert of the the Tunisian Sahara. As its name indicates it (Ksar is an Arab word which means “castle”), it shelters extremely old dating from the Roman epoch and located on the Limes which follows the limit of the desert.

The oasis is fed by a source of warm water in which one can bathe and who would have thermal virtues . Ksar Ghilane is difficult access: it is only connected by stony tracks, towards Douz (with 80 kilometers in north) or Matmata, that only can borrow the cross-country vehicles or the Dromadaire S.

It is used as refuge to about fifty wandering families of living exploitation of the Palmier-dattier, breeding of the Chèvre S and Mouton S and of a tourist activity increasingly important. Indeed, the oasis is the starting point of walks to back of dromedaries on the neighbouring Dune S while profiting from the relative freshness of the oasis and the comfort of the bathe in the source of warm water. With one kilometer in the east a stele, the column of the general Leclerc is set up, which testifies to the passage of its army in 1943 at the time of the Bataille of Ksar Ghilane. It carries the following inscription: Here, from February 23rd to March 10th, 1943, the Leclerc General and the Force L, come from Chad, supported the attack of the enemy forces victoriously, inflicting losses sévères. to them
