Kruiningen

Kruiningen is a village of the commune Dutchwoman of Reimerswaal, on the peninsula of Zuid-Beveland in Zealand. The village counts: 3890 inhabitants (2006).

The village owes its single notoriety with the connection of vats Kruiningen- Perkpolder. In 2003, this connection ceased during the inauguration of the Tunnel of the Western Scheldt.

History

The place where Kruiningen was born was located on one of the original small islands which formed Zuid-Beveland thereafter. The neighborhoods were dammed up by monks of the abbeys of Our-Lady-of-Dunes (Coxyde) and of Ter Doest.

Kruiningen was touched hard during the floods of 1953; 62 inhabitants lost the life and almost all the village was under water.

Since 1970, Kruiningen belongs to the commune of Reimerswaal of which it is the chief town.
