Kromme Rijn
The Kromme Rijn ( the Rhine curved ) is a Rivière Dutchwoman in the province of Utrecht. Until during the the Middle Ages, this river formed the principal course of the the Rhine. Since the Barrage builds in 1122, Kromme Rijn lost its function of principal arm of the river, taken again by the current Lek. Nowadays, Kromme Rijn constitutes a minor arm of the Rhine, which is detached some close to Wijk bij Duurstede. It forms the historical course of them, towards the North-West, in direction of Utrecht. Kromme Rijn has a length of approximately 28 km.
The river preserved the majority of its Méandre S. It passes to Cothen, Werkhoven, Odijk and Bunnik before arriving at Utrecht. In Utrecht, its water feeds the channels of the center town, as well as the channels of belt ( singels ). After the city, water is decided between the Vecht, the Leidse Rijn (which becomes Oude Rijn beyond Woerden and the Vaartse Rijn.
The river counts two lock S, in addition to that close to Wijk bij Duurstede, which allows the entry of water in Kromme Rijn.
The accesses of Kromme Rijn form an interesting and pleasant landscape. Several castles and fields are along the river, of which Amelisweerd, Rhijnauwen and Beverweerd.
