The Krautrock (or Kosmische Musik) is a Musical genre or movement which is largely associated with many German groups of the end of the Années 1960 and of the beginning of the 1970 such as Can, Popol Vuh, Cluster, Cosmic Jokers, Klaus Schulze, Faust, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Amon Düül, Ash Ra Tempel and Neu!. One can also quote: Kreidler, Spacemen 3, Foam One Mars, Kieron Hebden, Uwe Schmidt, Pole.

The word Krautrock is the contraction of " sauerkraut" (German sauerkraut) and rock'n'roll. " Krauts" were in fact the term by which the English soldiers pejoratively designated the German soldiers during the Second world war. The English media thus indicated by " Krautrock" German groups appeared with beginning of the year 70. This designation is generally not accepted by the groups themselves, not only because it is pejorative, but also because they do not consider that their music is rock'n'roll.

Especially instrumental, the signature of the sound of “Krautrock” mixes the electronic Musique rock'n'roll, improvisation, sources and the use of effects of studio. A fringe of this movement creates textures which precede the Ambient. Groups as Kraftwerk are also regarded as belonging to the Krautrock movement.

At the end of the Years 1990 and at the beginning of 2000, with the resurgence of the Electronic music, a redécouvre new generation the rock'n'roll experimental and planing German, among which Stereolab, Laika, Boredoms, and Tortoise of the tendencies Post-rock'n'roll and Electronica.
