Krasnokamensk (oblast of Tchita)
Krasnokamensk (in Russian: Краснокаменск) is a city of the Oblast de Tchita, in Russia. It is to 535 km in the south-east of Tchita, close to the borders Chinese and Mongolian. The city is the administrative center of the district of Krasnokamenski. Its population rose with 55 920 inhabitants in 2002 and 56 000 inhabitants in 2005.
Krasnokamensk is especially known for its mine of Uranium, largest of Russia, at the origin of rates of radiation ten to twenty times higher than the internationally allowed standards.
Since October 2005, Mikhaïl Khodorkovski, which was the sixteenth richest man of the world, condemned for tax evasion, is held in one of the hardest prisons and most isolated from Russia: the penal settlement IaG 14/10 of Krasnokamensk.
