Krai

A will krai or kraï (Russian: край), often translated by area , territory or province , is a term employed to indicate 8 of the 85 prone federal of Russia.

The word will krai (which means also border or fine ), is employed to indicate certain areas. Currently, there does not exist any real difference between a Kraï and a Oblast. The reasons of this difference in name are historical. At the time Soviet, the kraïs were characterized by the fact that one or more Autonomous Soviet republics formed part of it. From now on these republics form subjects of the Federation with whole share, and the kraïs are in any point similar. However, currently, several kraïs , like the Kraï of Kamtchatka or the Krai de Perm takes again a statute similar to that of the Soviet kraïs : they integrate areas into special statute, remainders of abolished autonomous districts. Its plural (krais) is kraïa (края) in Russian.

Krais, Oblast S and republics have the same constitutional statute. Some krais are so large that they are wider than much of European countries.

One will krai is divided into Raion S (Russian: районы).
