The kpayo is a name given to the Bénin with adulterated gasoline, of bad quality, which comes mainly from the close Nigeria, producer country of Pétrole universally recognized. Kpayo means " inférieure" quality; in Goun, a local language.

The kpayo, as it is of bad quality, causes a important Pollution atmospheric.

The phenomenon of the " kpayo" knew its beginnings about the years 1980 because of the economic crisis which shook the country. Let us recall that the gasoline in Nigeria costs the pump approximately three times less expensive than at the Benign one. Today, the use of the " kpayo" a width such as he knows henceforth makes part of the geographical, social and economic landscape of the Beninese city and Nigerian.

In all the country, this gasoline of Smuggling, imported illegally, is sold in grosses, averages and small bottles which one finds everywhere at the roadsides.

The trade of these products is very profitable. In the frontier Beninese cities, the near total of the population saw this activity.

This trade which gets enormous benefit, involves at the same time great risks, being given the precariousness of the conditions of storage of the product. One thus notes frequent fires with the very heavy assessments.
