Kozielsk

Kozielsk , also spelled Kozelsk (in Russian: Козе́льск) is a city of the Oblast de Kalouga, located on the Jizdra river, to 72 km in the western south of Kalouga. The population with the census of 2002 reached 19  907 inhabitants.

The name of Kozelsk was mentioned the first time in 1146 like part of the Principality of Chernigov. Kozelsk became famous in spring of 1238, when it was attacked by the army of Batu Khan. In 1446, Kozelsk was for a time attached to the Grand-Duché of Lithuania. In 1494, the city was finally annexed by the Moscovie.

Very venerated monastery Optina Pustyn of it is close. In 1939, it was used as prison camp for the Polish officers. Between April and May 1940, NKVD transferred roughly: 4500 of them in the forest close to Katyn.

The city was occupied by the army German from October in December 1941 and completely destroyed. Kozielsk was rebuilt after the war.
