Kouvola

Kouvola is a city south-east of the Finland, to 134 km of the capital Helsinki. It is officially capital area of the Vallée of Kymi, even if in practice it shares the administrative activities with Kotka. It is mainly a rail junction á proximity of the border Russian and a shopping mall and administrative near the large pulp mills which border the Kymijoki.

One finds there also one of principal the hippodromes of the country, theater each year in June of the Kymi Grand Prix.

It is bordered by the communes of Elimäki, Kuusankoski and Valkeala.

History

Shortly after the opening of the railway line towards Saint-Petersbourg in 1870, a station is built on the lord of future Kouvola (1875). A Russian garrison settles in the vicinity in 1910, accelerating the development of the small town. Into 1922, the great municipality of Valkeala is divided into several part of which one becomes Kouvola. The air raids of the Guerre of Winter devastate the city completely, but the rebuilding is fast after the Guerre of continuation. The commune is proclaimed city as of 1960.
