Kourgane

The term kourgane , which one also spells kurgan , is the Russian designation of the Tumulus. They are monticules, even of artificial hills, recovering a tomb.

The kourganes are particularly numerous in the north of the Black Sea (southernmost Russia and in Ukraine), but one also finds some in all is Europe. They were left by a population which lived in this area with the Neolithic , between -5000 and -3000. The archeologist Marija Gimbutas is at the origin of an assumption according to which this population would be proto-indo-European and that she would speak the mother language about all the Indo-European Langues (disputed assumption). When they started to disperse, these tribes knew already the metallurgy of the Cuivre, and they counted among the most former stockbreeders of horses of the world. They left a great number of Tumulus in which the contemporary archaeological excavations could put at the day of many objects and other testimonys of their company.

Kourganes were also left in this same area by the populations heiresses of these Proto-Indo-Europeans, which were in particular proto-indo-Iranian women, then Iranian and in particular Scythes. The tumulus of great dimension were those of kings. More in the east, with the Kazakhstan, they could reach 200 meters in diameter. These imposing tombs date from II.
