Koupalo
Koupalo is in the Slavic Mythologie a god of the sun, reincarnation and purification by water. According to the legends, Koupalo would have bathed and drowned to voluntarily obtain by this sacrifice the purification and resurrection. This pagan legend is very similar to others of the Germanic Mythologie and could be at the origin of the legend of the Saint Graal. At the time of the christianization of Russia, the clerks had other choices only to replace the divinities pagan who seemed impossible to make forget with the people. Consequently, Saint Jean Baptiste was indicated to evoke the antique Koupalo, god solar bathing in water to reappear purified. The festival of the Midsummer's Day Baptiste coincides curiously with the day of the celebration of the pagan god.
