Kounya-Ourguentch

Kounya-Ourguentch (" old woman Ourguentch "), with the Turkménistan, is the site of the old historical city of Ourguentch (Persan Gurgandj , Arab Jurjâniya ), which undoubtedly gave its name to the Organdi and was the capital of the Khwârazm-Shahs. The eminent doctor Ibn Sînâ (Avicenne) and the scientist encyclopedist Al-Biruni remained there at the end of the 10th century.

It is not very distant of Nukus, capital of the autonomous Republic of the Karakalpaks (Qoraqalpog `iston Respublikasi) in Ouzbékistan.

It was devastated in 1220 by the Mongolian of Gengis Khan then abandoned because of a change of course of the Amou-Daria; modern the Ourguentch was recreated to some 150 km from there, in current the Ouzbékistan.

In 2005, the ruins of Kounya-Ourguentch were registered with the World heritage of humanity by UNESCO.
