The river Kouilou-Niari — also spelled Kwilu , Kwila , or Kwil — is the principal river draining the coast of the République of Congo. The river is called Kouilou on the essence of its course, but rather Niari in the central area of the Niari. The river has for principal affluent the river Louessé and throws in the Atlantic Ocean. Its length is roughly 750 kilometers since its source to the coast.
The river comprises many water falls, which makes it unsuitable to navigation as of its mouth. Among most famous of them, the Falls Zrinski, named in the honor of Nikola Zrinski and Petar Zrinski, of noble the Croatian, by Dragutin Lerman, an agent of the State independent of Congo, which was the first colonial power to explore the river in 1882.
