Kotka
Kotka is a city of Finland located at the south-east of the country, on two islands with the mouth of the river Kymi. It is the most populated city area of the Vallée of Kymi.
Kotka means eagle in Finnois.
History
Kotka was with the Moyen-âge a center of trade on the road of the merchants Vikings.
In 1790, Russian founds a fort, which loses part of its utility with the total conquest of Finland by the Russia in 1809.
The town of Kotka is officially founded in 1878 by the tsar Alexandre II.
Located on one of the main roads of wood, with the mouth of one of the arms of the Kymi, the city increased at the same time as developed the trade and industries of wood. Today it is the first wood exporting port of Finland.
Geography
Located at the edge of the Gulf of Finland, the city is close to the Russian border (65 km of the border post of Vaalima). Helsinki distant of 135 km, is connected by the main road 7 (E18) which will be soon a highway on the totality of the way.Kotka is surrounded by the municipalities of Pyhtää in the west, Anjalankoski in north and Hamina in the east.

- the orthodoxe church St Nicolas of 1795, the oldest building of the city,
- the Kymi church of 1850 of the famous architect Carl Ludwig Engel,
- the church of Kotka in the center town, of 1898, in a Neo-gothic style ,
- the imperial house of fishing of Langinkoski of the tsar Alexandre III of Russia, at the edge of a branch of the Kymijoki.
