Korg Poly-800

The Poly-800 is a hybrid Synthétiseur Analogique/Numérique conceived and distributed by the Japanese company Korg between 1983 and 1987.

Its selling price at the time was particularly gravitational: less 1000  USD.

Two versions are distinguished. That of 1984 (Mk II) comprises a numerical effect delay instead of the chorus of the version 1983, the integrated sequencer could memorize more notes and the implementation MIDDAY was more advanced. Enough rare, there existed of Poly-800 with reversed keys. Its version rack is the EX-800 which has more modern memories and capacities MIDDAY.

Though different from its competitor the Juno of Roland, Poly-800 is able to produce rather interesting analogical sounds typified thanks to its 2 oscillators by way, in particular of the “tablecloths” and “coppers”, but its aspect “computer plastic”, its programming by menu and its memories very easily erasable (safeguard by piles and cassette) makes it far from attractive with use.

Its principal defect related to its modest cost: the analogical filter is only with one specimen, which limits the possibilities of the direct play. Certain owners do not hesitate to modify it by adding for example controls by potentiometer.

The DW-6000 and DW-8000 partly take again the analogical/numerical architecture of Poly-800 but are located in a higher range.

The virtual synthetizer Poly-850 de Synapse Audio reproduces the structure of Poly-800 accurately.
