Korean confederation of the trade unions
The Korean Confederation of the trade unions (more commonly KCTU for Korean Confederation off Trade Unions , 전국민주노동조합총연맹 ( Jeon-guk Minju Nodong Johap Chongyeonmaeng )) Korean trade union is a founded the November 11th 1995. It is affiliated with the international Trade-union confederation.
Created in clandestinity, whereas the only official trade union (FKTU) was related to the military regime, the KCTU was at the origin of an important strike movement in 1996-1997.
Authorized after the entry of the South Korea with OECD in 1997, the KCTU is today the second central trade-union in South Korea.
In 1998, the KCTU was withdrawn from the negotiations, which did not succeed, to found the five days working week.
In 1999, it counted 573.490 members in 1.226 trade unions.
At the end of 2001, its 600.000 members belonged mainly to the sectors of the metallurgy (166 000 members), of the public services (100 000), of teaching (88 000). KCTU asserts 800.000 members at the end of 2006.
In November 2006, the KCTU called at one day of strikes to protest against a bill aiming at increasing the flexibility of the job market.
The KCTU animated ten social movements with Hyundai Motor in 2006, the direction explaining the against-performances of the company by this strong agitation.
