Korea University

The University Goryeo ( Korean : 고려대학교; English : Korea University) is the establishment of education higher oldest in Korea and considered also as one of most prestigious of the Korean company. In addition to the reputation academically famous, it holds in high regard its history, its old traditions and its contributions to the nation. Founded in 1905 by Lee Yongik as a first modern educational institute in Korea, the university currently comprises 81 academic departments in 15 faculties with 75 research institutes. Nearly 30.000 students are accommodated each year on all the levels (license, master and doctorate) of Korea and the whole world.

Localization

The principal campus (Anam Campus) is located in the district of Anam-dong, inside the district of Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. A subway station is located beside the university, under the name of “Korea University Station” (고려대역) on line 6.

As for the auxiliary campuses, two are in the nation; Seochang Campus and Jeongneung Campus. Seochang Campus, considered as secondary campus of the university, is located in Yeonki-gun, Jochiwon-eup in the province of Chungnam. Jeongneung Campus, which is devoted especially to medical science, is found in Jeongneung-dong, Seoul.

History

1905. 05 is founded; Mr. Shin Hae-Uoung inaugurated as a first president of the institute.

1907. 02 first handing-over of the diplomas.

1946. 08 High on the level of the university under the name of “Goryeo University”. (Korea University)

1946. 08 establishment of the faculty of policy and right, the faculty of economy and trade, and the faculty of letters.

2000. 04 “centenary Project” is launched.

2001. 06 the initiation of the academic program in collaboration with the University of the Colombia-British. (KU-UBC Joint Academic Program)

2003. 09 Recognized like exceptional university according to universalization by the ministry of education.

2003. The development of the programs of exchange. (University Renmin, China; University Waseda, Japan; CPU Davis, the United States; Royal Holloway, University of London, the United Kingdom; University of the Colombia-British, Canada; and University Griffith, Australia)

2006. The international programme of exchange in partnership with the Institute of political studies of Paris (Science Po), France.

Reputation

The Goryeo University is one of the universities which names “SKY” in Korea. The acronym represents the first initial ones of the three most prestigious and desired universities among the Koreans; Seoul National University, Korea University and Yonsei University. The admission at these institutes requires much intense competition and a diploma of one of universities “SKY” is considered as success and an honor in the Korean company. ()

School realization

The Goryeo University drew the international attention when it chooses as a one of the 200 meillieures universities in the world by the British newspaper, “The Times” . According to the result, the faculty of social sciences of the Goryeo University was classified 66éme and the faculty of letters, 89éme. Currently, the total classification of the university is 150éme, according to research in 2006.

The plays KB-Yon

The competition between the Goryeo University and the University Yonsei, the two private institutes most prestigious of the nation, is nationally famous. An intense competition of five events (the Baseball, the Basketball, the Football, Rugby and the Hockey) proceeds each year, and of the students of the two universities become supporteurs in favor of their school team. The competition is indeed strong; even the name of the plays is often discussed - the supporteurs of Godae (the diminutive of Goryeo Daehakgyo ) call it “KB-Yon” while those of Yonsei prefer to name it vice versa.

Project “Total KU”

By accommodating the birthday centenary, the Goryeo University carries out project “Total KU”; concentrating on the training of the students to the international level, creating the infrastructure of quality, increasing the volume of research and the investment, and preserving the administration at a world level. Currently, the university aims at becoming one of the 100 meillieurs educational institutes in the world from here 2010.
