Koprivchtitsa

Koprivchtitsa is a Bulgarian city.

Geography

Koprivchtitsa is located at 110km in the South-east of Sofia in the mountain Sashtinska Sredna Gora. 2935 inhabitants to date there are counted.

History

It is a city-museum created at the 14th century and made famous for the first shot of the insurrection of April in 1876 (resistance movement against the Turkish invasion). Many poets, writers and revolutionists settled there and their houses were transformed into museums. One can visit the following monuments in particular there:
  • House of Dimcho Debelyanov : poet (1887 - 1916)
  • Tomb of Debelyanov
  • House of Lyuben Karavelov : combatant of Bulgarian independence
  • House of Georgi Benkovski : revolutionist
  • House of Naiden Gerov : revolutionist
  • House of Todor Kablechkov : revolutionist
  • Tomb of Kablechkov
  • House Oslekov : middle-class house of 1856
  • Mausoleum Apriltsi Located on the central place, it pays homage to the heroes of April 1876.
  • Church Sveta Bogoroditsa : built in 1817 with the site of an old church destroyed by Turkish.

Koprivchtitsa preserves a typically Bulgarian architectural style 19th century.
