Konrad von Megenberg
Konrad von Megenberg was teaching and a German writer of the Rebirth. He would seem to be born in 1309 with Mäbenberg close to Nuremberg. He dies in 1374 with Ratisbon.
Its studies lead it to Erfurt then with Paris where it obtains a magister artium . He teaches philosophy and theology with the Sorbonne of 1334 with 1342. He turns over then to Germany to Ratisbon. Member of the clergy he becomes preacher. He will finish with the council of the city.
It is one of the most prolific German authors of the 14th century. Its most known work is Das Buch der Natur to which he worked starting from 1349.
It is the first work concerning the natural history printed in German language and which comprises illustrations of animals.
In 8 chapters, it gathers knowledge of its time:
- the nature of the man;
- sky, 7 planets, astronomy and meteorology;
- zoology;
- ordinary and aromatic trees;
- plants and vegetables;
- invaluable and semi-precious stones;
- 10 kinds of metals;
- water and rivers.
This organization is typical of many medieval encyclopedias. The sources of inspiration of Konrad von Megenberg are to be sought in the Latin work of the Dominican Belgian Thomas de Cantimpré Liber of will natura rerum written around 1228.
