Konqueror is a Navigateur Web and a free Gestionnaire of files of the free Environnement of office KDE.

Qualified by its supporters of “  true Multi-fonction pocket knife of the environment of KDE  Bureau; ”, it can also post the contents of a Serveur ftp as if it were about a local file, to allow to traverse the Lan, to visualize files, and to return a very great number of related services to the file management.

User interface

The Interface user of Konqueror is extremely configurable, and thus allows each one, according to its preferences, to obtain an interface nearest possible to its needs, which it is a question of having a tool stripped or rich in functions.

Profiles of posting

With this intention, it is possible to create various profiles of posting other than those available by defect, and in which one can add, arrange, even remove panels of information or buttons.

For example, it is perfectly possible to post the panel of bookmarks (still known under the name of mark-pages or favorites) on a side of the navigator, making it possible of a simple click on a bookmark to post the corresponding page on the panel of navigation.

One can also post a panel containing the tree structure of the repertories, or his collection of musics, vidéos, images, and to combine the use of Konqueror with software such as Amarok, Kaffeine or KuickShow, which then makes of it a frightening tool of effectiveness.

One can also separate into two (or more) the zone from posting and post in the same sight two different files or a local file and a repertory ftp.

Functions of navigation

The functions of navigation (preceding page, page following, historical, etc) are available constantly, and the near total of the interface perhaps configured to answer short cuts keyboard, the majority being already preset (like F11 to rock in posting full screen, etc), thus making it possible to carry out the totality of the operations to the keyboard.

The bar of address has a wide support of autocomplétion for the local directories, Internet addresses and the search engines.

Whatever the profile of posting used, Konqueror makes it possible to benefit from the Navigation by miter, making it possible to not open files in the window in progress, nor even in another window, but in a miter, which comes to be added to the list of the miters already open on the window in progress. It is then enough to click on a miter to post the contents of the file or the corresponding Web page, or for example to slip a file since a file and to deposit it on a miter so that it is copied there.

This mode of navigation avoids having the quickly invaded screen of windows, but also makes it possible to gather its activities, for example by topic. Thus, all the pages related to a Web site can be open in miters of a window, while local navigation in the personal file is in another, and so on. It is also possible to mix pages of navigation on Internet to local files in the miters, thus making it possible to gather in miters all the pages and information related with the development of a file of work.

Navigator Internet

Konqueror was developed as independent navigator Internet. It uses driving KHTML like of returned of the pages, which meets the standards HTML. It supports the JavaScript, the appliquettes Java, the Style sheets cascades about it, SSL and other standards, as well as animations the video flash, and streaming. This same engine was taken again by Apple in its navigator Safari.

To prove the very modular nature of Konqueror, a module had been developed to be able to use the engine of returned Gecko of Mozilla instead of KHTML. This module is called kmozilla and can be found in parcelling kdebindings but it is not maintained any more because the interface of communication with Gecko too often evolved/moved. This module was only one demonstration of the flexibility of technology KParts. However, on September 11th, 2004, a new project of port of Gecko on Konqueror appeared, seems it more complete than the precedent.

Konqueror integrates several research services, which can be consulted by seizing the code of abbreviation of the service (for example “gg: ” for Google), followed research topics.

After implementhaving implemented it in Safari, David Hyatt recently offered to the developers of Konqueror the improvements made to KHTML enabling him to pass the very selective test Acid2. Safari and Konqueror are thus the two first (joined since by version 9.0 of Opera) navigators Internet to pass this test.

Manager of files

Like Internet Explorer, Konqueror allows the posting of the local files, either by seizing the site in the bar of addresses, or by choosing elements in the window of the manager of files. It allows the posting in various manners, which differ by their use of the icons and their provision, in a way comparable with Windows. A seen of bigger size is posted when the pointer passes in the vicinity of a file. This outline is all the more detailed as the pointer is delayed on this one, in a skeletal way by the user.

Like very good manager of files, it obviously makes it possible to launch programs, to open, copy, move or remove files.

Visualisor of files

By using the model of object of KParts, Konqueror charges the components making it possible to visualize (and sometimes to publish) specific types of files, and directly takes on board the reader in Konqueror, in which the respective files were open. This allows, for example, to look at an office automation document of the continuation KOffice directly in Konqueror. Any application which implements the KParts model correctly can be included in this way.
