Koillismaa
The Koillismaa is a territory of Finland, with contours little clearly definite. Stuck to the Russian border , in the North-East of the country, it is an intermediate zone between the low hills of the Kainuu and the tundra and the low forest of the Finnish Lapland. With the administrative direction, which reduces Koillismaa strictly, the name relates to the north-eastern subdivision of the area of Ostrobotnie of North, formed by the municipalities of Kuusamo and Taivalkoski, is 8.462 km ² and less than 22.000 inhabitants.
If a geographical definition is taken, the territory corresponds to a dense boreal forest zone, a relief which rises, punctuated by the southernmost Tunturi S, and a very low population density. The breeding of the Renne S is practiced but very limited in such a dense forest. According to these criteria, one can add to it Pudasjärvi and the Lapp municipality of Posio. In this case one reaches 35.400 inhabitants out of 17.869 km ². Salted and Suomussalmi sometimes also asserts their membership of the area.
The regional identity is strong but the population is considered to be insufficient to create a separate area. Kollismaa thus continues to be essentially managed since Oulu, which makes Ostrobotnie of North the most contrasted area of the country.
