Kofi Annan

Épaney is a common French, located in the department of the Calvados and the area Basse-Normandie.

Épaney is a typical village of the plain of Caen. Located at 30km in the south of Caen and at 8 km in the North-East of Cliff, the village was rather saved by the Bataille of Normandy during the Second world war. It thus preserved an architecture and a seal which testifies to its past.

Boroughs

Épaney consists of two boroughs of equal importance: the current borough, where the church is located, and the Fountains , which is joint village of Perrières. At the 12th century, the parish of Épaney had two owners: monks of Saint-Evroult and monks of Marmoutiers. The first received said them of Épaney, the barn with said is located beside the church. The seconds had the priory of Perrières. According to their constraint with such or such owner, the inhabitants had thus settled either near the church, or near the village of Perrières.

History

The origin of the name Épaney neither was found in registers, nor deduced by archaeological research. The origin most frequently evoked is a Roman citizen named Spanius which would have left its name to the village.

Economy at the 19th century

The economy of the village was centered on two sectors: the Hosiery and the Agriculture.

Hosiery

Throughout the 19th century, the textile craft industry generated more half of local employment.

Agriculture

At the 19th century, the Agriculture generated half less employment than the Bonneterie.

Nowadays, helping progress, the number of farmers with appreciably decreased but the totality of the grounds is exploited. Since the crisis of milk and the establishment of quotas, the agricultural production is mainly turned towards the culture.
