Koekelberg

Koekelberg is one of the 19 common bilingual of Belgium located in the Région of Brussels-Capital.

In 2005, it counts approximately 17.721 inhabitants and covers a surface of 1,2 km ².

It is bordering on the communes of Jette, Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Ganshoren and Berchem-Holy-Agathe.

The hamlet of Koekelberg administratively depended on the commune of Berchem-Holy-Agathe until in 1841. It sheltered a seigneurery which played an important role in the history of Brussels. It is indeed Jean de Locquenghien, lord of Koekelberg, which made amongst other things, to dig the Canal of Willebroek. A pillar of the economic advancement which allowed the multiplication of the industrial plants and commercial.

Principal curiosity is the basilica of the Sacred Heart. It is in 1905, that Léopold II posed the first stone of the basilica at the time of the 75ème birthday of Belgian independence.

The commune also shelters two athenaeums: Royal Athenaeum of Koekelberg (ARK - French-speaking person) and Koninklijk Atheneum van Koekelberg (Dutch-speaking).
