Kocaeli (city)

Kocaeli (or İzmit ) is a town of Turkey, Préfecture of the homonymous province.

Kocaeli (İzmit) is located at the Eastern end of the Golfe of İzmit, prolongation towards the East of the vast basin of collapse of the Marmara Sea.

Earthquake of 1999

This city belonging to the South-eastern outer suburbs of Istanbul was sadly found under the full glare of the medias following the violent one Séisme who affected it the 8/17/1999. Kocaeli is indeed built on the Anatolian Northern Faille, long Faille in setback of the North of Turkey. This seism, magnitude 7.4, felt in all the agglomeration of Large Istanbul, made more than 17.000 victims. It has particularly affected the towns of Kocaeli, Adapazarı, Düzce, Gölcük and Yalova. The Gulf of Izmit is all the more vulnerable to the earthquakes which it shelters a big part of heavy industries in Turkey (refinery, naval constructions and cars, cement factories, chemistry.).

Economy

PIB/habitant of the department of Kocaeli is one of highest of Turkey, mainly thanks to this important concentration of industries.
