Knez Mihailova

Ulica Knez Mihailova or street of the Prince Michel , in Serb Cyrillic Sr УлицаКнезМихаилова, is principal the Mall of the town of Belgrade, the capital of the Serbia. It is located in the municipality of Stari Grad.

The street Knez Mihailova is protected by the law because of the seniority and the value of its architectural heritage, in particular of constructions dating from the years 1870.

History

The street of Prince Michel is located at the site of the old center of the Roman city of Singidunum. At the time of the Ottoman Empire, this sector consisted of tortuous streets, with gardens, fountains and mosques. In the middle of the 19th century, in the upper part of the current street, the gardens of the prince Alexandre Karađorđević were. After the final departure of the Turks in 1867, a town-planning was imposed on the city, conceived by Emilijan Josimović. The sight was entirely rebuilt and it took the aspect that one sees him today. Houses were built there and from many rich and influential families living in Belgrade came to settle there. In 1870, the municipal authorities gave to the street its official name Ulica Kneza Mihaila , in the honor of the prince Michel III Obrenović.

Today

The street of Prince Michel is regarded as one of the most beautiful malls of Eastern Europe. It is a place of walk and appointment for Belgradois. It is also the shortest way to go Terazije to the fortress and the park of Kalemegdan.

In the street, are located the Serb Académie of sciences and arts (SANU), the Institut Cervantes, the Goethe-Institute, the Arts center French, the British Council, as well as stores of luxury and several coffees.
