Knesset

The Knesset (כנסת, assembled , in Hebrew) is the Israeli Parlement . It is located at Jerusalem. This Parliament is monocaméral.

History

It gathered for the first time the February 14th 1949, succeeding the Asefat ha-nivharim, the Jewish National Assembly during the British mandate in Palestine.

Role

As a Parliament, Knesset is the holder of the Legislative power, but also of a power to control on the Executive power. Thus it:
  • vote the Law S,
  • vote the budget,
  • control the Government,
  • elects the president of the State and its controller,
  • can censure the government.

Election of the members of Parliament

Knesset is made up of 120 deputies, elected for a 4 years mandate. It can be dissolved by the President of the State, at the request of the Prime Minister.

The election of Knesset is proportional and to a district. This last characteristic makes that certain large political parties can present to 120 people on a list. So that a party obtains at least a seat, it is necessary that it reached a proportion minimum of voice. This threshold was of 1,5% in 2003 and was raised to 2% in 2006.
