Klaus Schulze
Klaus Schulze is a German Musicien born the August 4th 1947 with Berlin.
Percussionniste, then Type-setter, producing and interprets pioneer of Electronic music, it took part in the beginnings of Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel before becoming in solo one of the largest electronic type-setters. One will quote inter alia his albums Timewind ; who was worth to him the Grand Prix of the academy Charles Cros (1975) Moondawn (1976), more sold: Mirage (1977) Dune (1979), Dreams (1986), Miditerranean Pads (1990) and the double In Blue (1995).
Its course on the German rock'n'roll, then French and international, is singular. Precursor and engine of the space German rock'n'roll (see Germany), it is one of the first musicians to be tested on the new instrument which is the Synthétiseur, of which it uses several models with brilliance. Marked by Wagner, the rock'n'roll psychedelic, the repetitive music and of avant-garde, it is quickly followed by many followers (even if Schulze always denied influences direct of the avantgarde, in particular these possible connections with Stockhausen). By introducing electronic percussions into its music, it becomes with Kraftwerk the large pioneer of the entirely electronic music, and with Tangerine Dream the principal artist of the current of “planing music”, very popular in France starting from 1975. Productive, Schulze is directed little by little towards an original music which integrates German opera, rates/rhythms and strange sounds whereas in the years 1990 a worship of sound work develops among the musicians of techno, of trance, and all the musics “ambient” in vogue.
History
(1963-1971) In group
After having practiced the traditional Guitar as of the 4 years age, having played of the skiffle to low and having taken part in the guitar in 1963 with its first rock group, the Barons, the young person Klaus Schulze undertakes studies of philology and composition of modern music at the university of Berlin. He studies Ligeti, Dahlhaus, Winkel but belonged to the night scene rock'n'roll marginal. He goes up on scene in 1967-68 with the trio Psy Free (which bears its name well), where he plays of the battery in a very free style.
But as of 1968 it records already bands with the organ, to which where it adds already sounds of Synthétiseur. With the end of the year it replaces the beater of Tangerine Dream and plays in many concerts, in particular in first part of Jimi Hendrix with the Sport hall in Berlin. Their first album Electronic Meditation is recorded in October 1969. Schulze replaces the beater absent from Amon Düül II with the festival of fine Essen 1969. This day Edgar Froese however reproaches him for having used “strange bands of organ” at the time of the service “avant-gardist” of Tangerine Dream, it leaves the group in spring 1970 before the exit of the disc and convinces Manuel Göttsching and Hartmut Enke to found Ash Ra Tempel by giving up the blues to create the “Space rock'n'roll”. After much in concerts and experiments on tape, the first album is recorded in March 1971, but besides some additional interventions Klaus is always with the battery and the style “free impromptu rock'n'roll” did not make place with the cosmic sounds yet.
(1971 -….) In solo
Schulze begins its career solo in spring 1971 and produced its Irrlicht , of the electronic waves of sounds, in April 1972. It takes part with Göttsching in the Tarot album with important German avant-gardists and serious with him Join Inn of Ash Ra Tempel. It only goes up on scene only in 1973 and records the double 33 turns Cyborg , then Picture Music (left in 1975), always of long monotonous electronic beaches. It takes part in five albums of the Cosmic Jokers with various musicians, takes part in a crowd of discs, plays with a Tangerine Dream converted with electronics and sign with the discs Virgin.
With Blackdance (1974), Klaus Schulze finds its true style. With a box at rate/rhythm and a proliferation of hypnotic electronic sounds, it creates true “the space rock'n'roll” awaited at one very favourable time for this evocative sound of escape. But Timewind in 1975 is its large masterpiece (Bayreuth Return), rewarded by the International Grand Prix for the disc in France, where it turns for the first time. It introduced there the use of sequencers and new synthetizers to the extraordinary sounds but its musical vision, especially, is of a remarkable originality, hypnotic and really cosmic. With Tangerine Dream, Schulze is in the middle of vagueness “space rock'n'roll”, or electronic rock'n'roll planing, which precedes the punk new wave (see Germany).
It leaves Berlin and buys a residence in the village of Hambühren, close to Hanover, which it equips with studios, video workshop, offices, scene, etc It installs its personal giant studio at his place, in full forest, and in December buys one of the rare specimens manufactured of new and colossal the Big Moog, become legendary, which will accompany it from now on on scene like a folding screen by indicators and buttons.
In 1976 it engraves Moondawn , new success, where it uses this time the battery of Harald Grosskopf and form GO with Steve Winwood, Stomu Yamashta and Michael Shrieve, with whom it records an album, then the double Go Live From Paris . In 1977 it publishes the band its erotic film Body Love on disc (an American success, followed Body Love vol. 2 ) and carries out the music of several other films. Then it is second Go, Go Too. Without stop in round, it publishes Mirage in 1977, then the double album " X" in 1978.
After Dune in 1979, it is blown créativement and is devoted to various and many productions of its new mark IC, while publishing a first album under the name of Richard Wahnfried . It opens a school of synthetizer in its residence. In 1980 it is the double … Live… then Dig It , its first numerical disc. During the Eighties it continues the film musics, publishes CD per annum (in addition to three others Richard Wahnfried ), produced various discs (whose Alphaville in 1988), collaborates in tens of projects (Babel album with Andreas Grosser into 87), and occurs in all the Europe, in particular in the east. It becomes extremely popular in Poland and ceases its rounds in 1983. It carries out the music of the film Angst.
Klaus Schulze closes its two labels of discs and is devoted entirely to its enregistements multiple. He is discovered in the United States with his " Pioneer off Space" diffused on sixty radios and occurs with Dresden a few weeks before the fall of the wall of Berlin. In 1990 double CD in public immortalise this event and it republishes this concept with three discs recorded at the time of exceptional concerts in London and the cathedral of Cologne. At the end of twenty-six albums solo under its name a remarkable box leaves ten CD in limited edition Silver Edition , accommodated very well. After years of absence in France, it carried out the original soundtrack of the film " The Mill of Daudet" and two concerts with exceptional environment before being accommodated by François Mitterrand and the king Albert II.
Courted by English musicians of techno vagueness who want to record with him, it records Trancelation (followed Trance Appeal into 96) in a style “dance music” under the name of Richard Wahnfried , followed Klaus Schulze Goes Classic where its German roots are particularly sensitive. It is then Totentag , of the opera, then Das Wagner Desaster in public in Paris and Rome. After In Blue in 1995, it publishes a retrospective of new recordings, a sumptuous box of ten CD in limited edition, Historic Edition . These discs are particularly well accommodated, and are followed of six albums of the beginnings of Ash Ra Tempel. After Are You Sequenced? , it publishes for its fiftieth birthday a box of twenty-five albums, Jubilee Edition , very quickly exhausted (like the two preceding boxes). In 1998 it had published not less than sixty eighteen albums under its name, exploiting a total of one hundred thirty seven discs.
In the tread, it publishes two boxes of listening music Contemprorary works (respectively ten and six Cd) more one triple live in 2001 Live @ Klangart .
