KaZaA is a customer P2P being connected on the network FastTrack, characterized by its decentralized architecture. A few years ago, FastTrack was regarded as network P2P more used in the world (approximately 3 million connected on average).

KaZaA is often criticized for various reasons:

  • by the users, because it integrates many Spyware S (software spies), for example New.net and Cydoor.
  • by the recording companies because it is used mainly as musical means of file-swapping protected by Copyright.

Sharman Networks, security company of KaZaA, has little time ago obtained win against the charges of the large recording companies and RIAA, for violation of copyright: this victory is due to this Décentralisation network which KaZaA uses: the files which circulate of station-with-station are not contained in a principal waiter (contrary to the famous customer Napster, which precisely lost its lawsuit for this reason). The control of information being almost impossible, Niklas Zennström (founder of KaZaA, and also developer of Skype and the The Venice Project.) thus has no responsibility vis-a-vis the type of contents (free of right or under license of royalties) circulating thanks to its creation.

There exists a version of KaZaA without software spy called Kazaa Lite. This version not being produced by Sharman Networks, the latter attaquèrenet the authors of Kazaa Lite in justice and obtained win.

In spite of that, KaZaA took since 2001 the continuation of Napster like reference impossible to circumvent in the general public or the press, when one wishes to describe a free means to exchange music files or video. However, the legal attacks against the illegal downloading on KaZaA pushed the users more and more to forsake it for other software such EMule. In 2007, the base of users of KaZaA is almost null.
