Cagnotte is a common French, located in the department of the Landes and the area Aquitaine.

Etymology of the toponym

Contrary to a popular etymology conveyed by a legend (and by the majority of the quoted sources supra in external bonds…), the name of this commune is not derived from the occitan canhot (puppy). In her toponymic Dictionary of the communes of the Moors and Bas-Adour , Bénédicte Boyrié-Fénié explains that it is acted in fact of a derivation of caned , Latin term of approximate Géologie, which means raising or ridges. In fact, the Abbaye was built with the foot of the hillock which accommodates, nowadays, the borough.

The center of the village moved towards the current borough at the time of the equipment of the abbey, with the XIIe century. Previously, the principal village was with three kilometers more in north, in the Hameau of Cazordite.
