Kitona
Kitona is a locality of approximately 4.000 inhabitants of the seaboard province of the Low-Congo in Democratic republic of Congo, territory of Moanda. She is located at approximately 300 kilometers in the south-west of Kinshasa. The locality accommodates a small military base equipped with a landing strip. After the Second world war, the Belgian Armée established two bases soldier, here and has Kamina. They made a role important during the Congolese Crise, 1960-65.
At the beginning of the Second war of Congo in August 1998, the rebels of the Congolese Rassemblement for the Democracy took three planes with Goma and sent them to Kitona, attacking the garrison by surprised and taking the locality. The rebels seized most of Low-Congo, and in particular of the Barrages of Inga, which enabled them to cut the electricity of Kinshasa, and to threaten a time the capital by going up the Route of Matadi. The locality was taken again the August 22nd by the forces Angola ises close to the government of Kinshasa, parts of Cabinda, and equipped with tanks.
