Kitani Minoru

Kitani Minoru (木谷実, January 25th, 1909 - December 19th, 1975) was one of the professional players of go most famous to the Japan, during the 20th century.

Biography

It was a young wonder which drew the attention after the creation of the Nihon Ki-in, in 1924. He then became a large rival and a large friend of Go Seigen after this one had left its native China to settle with the Japan.

Go and Kitani are at the origin of the theory avant-gardist of the Shinfuseki or " news ouverture" , during the period 1933-36 during which many innovations revolutionized the Théorie of opening of the play of go.

Kitani was the adversary of Meijin Shusai in its last part before it takes its retirement. This confrontation is celebrated by Yasunari Kawabata in the Master or the tournament of go (Kawabata changed the name of Kitani into Otake ).

Go Seigen and Kitani took part in the competition of the Kamakura jubango, of 1939, which became thereafter the most memorable Match in 10 parts of this century. The match ended in a decisive victory of Go. During the remainder of its career, Kitani forever really be able to play as it made it young person. Moreover, its bad health obstructed it passably. Later, he was recognized for his spectacular particular style which consisted in stressing the defense of the territory.

Later on, he undertook a career as a teacher of the Jeu of go near the future professional players. The dojo of Kitani took its take-off about 1945 in the country house of Kitani, but was held on the practical level by his wife. In this place, a whole generation of high level players was formed who dominated the Japanese go since the beginning of the years 1970 until half of the years 1990. Among his pupils, one raises in particular Otake Hideo, Kato Masao, Ishida Yoshio, Cho Chikun, Takemiya Masaki and Kobayashi Koichi.
