Kiruna

Kiruna is a town of 19  148 inhabitants in Swedish Lapland and the chief town of the Common of Kiruna. This city was born at the beginning of the 20th century to work the mines of Fer which are there. Still currently, one finds there the largest mine of the world with open sky.

It is located on the railway line connecting Luleå, the large Swedish port on the Baltique, with Narvik, the large Norwegian port on the Atlantique. The ore trains supply these two ports since Kiruna.

The authorities of the city are in front of a dilemma: the continuation of the exploitation of the mine would involve the collapse of part of the city. But the stop of the exploitation of the mine would mark the economic death of the city, which depends almost entirely on the mining activity. Part of the city, whose Station and church, will be probably moved in order to make it possible mining to continue.

The Launching base of Fusée-sonde of Esrange is to forty kilometers of the city.
