Kirkwall

Kirkwall is the principal city and the capital of the archipelago of the the Orkneys, in the north of Scotland.

The name Kirkwall comes from Norwegian Kirkjuvagr (“bay of the church”), deformed in Kirkvoe and Kirkwaa .

Kirkwall is located on the northern coast of the principal island of the archipelago. Its port is connected by ferry to Aberdeen and Lerwick like to the principal islands of the archipelago located at north. The population of Kirwall is approximately 8500 inhabitants.

The cathedral Saint Magnus is drawn up in the center of the city. It was founded in memory of saint Magnus Erlendsson, count d' Orkney (1108-1117) by the count (canonized later) Rögnvald Kali. The episcopal palate and the palate comtal are close to the cathedral. The museum of Tankerness House preserves prehistoric collections of objects, Pictes and Viking S of international importance.
