This city was founded in 1693 by the England after an earthquake destroyed the port city of Royal Port. The city becomes the administrative capital of Jamaica in 1872 and preserves this statute when the island becomes independent in 1962.Kingston, which after 1962 becomes the capital of independent Jamaica, is with the image many cities belonging to colonized in the past countries: a downtown area and a northern district directly inherited the British colonists, and where the major part of the economic activities and policies concentrate, making contrast very Net and very violent with the reality of the disadvantaged districts. The urban development is not controlled any more and the " shanty towns" (shantytowns) increase in surface and population. Kingston does not escape the phenomenon of impoverishment from the suburbs, and accommodates each day of new inhabitants that the rural migration continues to carry out in the capital.
Kingston shelters the popular quarters of Trenchtown, district of origin of the artists jamaïcains of world famous: Bob Marley, which democratized the musical style of the Reggae, Peter Tosh or Burning Spear. It moreover gave its name to the famous song of the group UB40 Kingston town (begun again of Lord Creator). The town of Kingston is very marked, and more particularly in the southern districts, by the influence Rastafari whose spokesperson was Bob Marley. But these districts are also poorest and most unhealthy of the city.
