Kingsley Charles Dunham
Sir Kingsley Charles Dunham (1910 - 2001) is a geologist and British mineralogist .
Dunham is born in Sturminster in the Dorset from where its family moves during her youth for Durham. It makes its secondary studies with the Durham Johnston Comprehensive School then with the Université of Durham where it is graduate in Géologie in 1930 at the time or Arthur Holmes is professor. He is also a gifted musician and plays of the Orgue to the Hatfield College. He continues his research on the iron ore in England of north under the supervision of Holmes. Dunham receives its Ph.D. in 1932
After one short period with the University Harvard, it turns over to Great Britain as geologist to work with the geological survey of Great Britain, it works on the iron ores of the county of Cumbrie. This work is published in The Geology off the North Pennine Orefield .
Dunham returns to the university of Durham in 1950 as professor of geology. It supervises the drilling of Rokhope to explore the underlying structure of iron the layers of the Pennines of north, the presence of Granite, already suspecté, under Pennines was thus confirmed.
In 1967 its career culminates with the position of director of the geological survey of Great Britain. Dunham is made knight in 1972. After having taken its retirement in 1975, Dunham becomes Professor emeritus in Durham, it continues to make research and publishes on the Minéralogie of England of north.
Dunham receives many honors, member of the Royal Society in 1955, it receives the royal Médaille in 1970 as well as the Médaille Bigsby in 1953, the Médaille Murchison in 1966 and the Médaille Wollaston in 1976. He is also president of the Yorkshire Geological Society in 1958 and 1959, company of which he receives the Sorby medal. Ten university in the world names it Honorary doctor.
During its last years its sight decreases until in becoming blind, it continues to attend the weekly meetings of Durham with the assistance of one of his/her colleagues. His/her son, who dies before him, Ansel Dunham, is him also professor of geology.
