Kingdom of Holland

The Royaume of Holland was created on June 5th 1806, when the emperor Napoleon replaced the Batavian République by a Monarchie under the reign of his brother Louis Bonaparte, the king Louis I of Holland. The name of the most known province of the Netherlands, the Holland, was taken for all the country.

The Kingdom of Holland , was a state marionette French which existed from June 5th, 1806 to July 9th, 1810. Its territory was surrounded by the the North Sea in the west and north, the Confédération of the Rhine in the east and the First Empire French in the south.

History

Napoleon with had ordered his brother to remain French, but Louis Napoleon was very presented in the form of a king Dutch . He was recalcitrant with the introduction negative French measurements for Holland like the Conscription and the continental Blocus. The king had like currency: Of or vel thus nor of man (nl: Doe wel in zie niet om , which means: Made the good and does not look at behind). Its efforts to show itself well by the Dutch population were badly seen by his/her brother the emperor.

In 1809, the English invasion of the island of Walcheren was pushed back by the French Armies and Dutch (Dutchwomen), but the emperor Napoleon Bonaparte found the action taken too hesitant and king Louis Bonaparte still lost credit as a sovereign.

Thus, during the winter of 1809 - 1810 one already spoke to remove the kingdom of Holland. By imperial Decree, Napoleon put initially the south of the Kingdom under French government and a few months later the remainder of the old kingdom of Holland followed. King Louis Napoleon abdicated, thus hoping to keep the sovereignty of Holland. July 1st, its young person wire six year old, Napoleon-Louis Bonaparte was formally devoted king Louis II of Holland , but the Napoleon emperor neglects this decision and appendix the Netherlands a few weeks later, on July 13rd, 1810.

The Netherlands make even more than three years left the First French Empire, until November 1813. The king Guillaume Ier unloaded with Scheveningen on November 13rd, 1813 and took a few days later the title of Souverain.

April 13rd, 1807 the department of Holland was divided into two departments Amstelland and Maasland.

During the Fourth coalition, the French Armies and Dutch occupied the Eastern Frise Prussian and the Russian Jeverland . In 1807 one added these two areas to the Kingdom of Holland and one made of it the 11th department of the Eastern Frise.

The Limbourg, the island of Walcheren and the Flanders zélandaise did not belong to the Kingdom of Holland, and like Belgium, these areas fell directly under the government from the French Empire.

Historical consequences

The Kingdom of Holland put an end to the Batavian République.

King Louis moved the capital of the country in 1808 of $the Hague to Amsterdam, and it settled with the Paleis COp of Prejudice, which until this moment was town hall of Amsterdam. After 1813, Amsterdam formally remained the capital of the Netherlands, even if $the Hague point of disjunction the seat of the Dutch government.

On the cultural level, Louis I {{er}} also exerted its influence. It stimulated arts and sciences Dutchwomen, amongst other things by melting the Royal Institute of Sciences, precursor of and the royal Bibliothèque of the Netherlands. It initiated the later foundation of the current Rijksmuseum, by temporarily installing the collection of Rijksmuseum of $the Hague in Paleis COp of Prejudice. In the religious plan, it founded cases for the catholic S which after more than one century of oppression wanted to build churches. All made accounts, Louis I {{er}} did much good for the Netherlands.

After the French period, the Oranges took again the government of the Netherlands, this time as a king. Many reformations of the government institutions initiated by Louis I, are continued by oranges. The government décentral and suvent inffecient of the old republic was replaced by a modern centralized mode étataire.
