Kingdom of Ava

The name of Royaume of Ava was used by the Westerners to indicate the Burmese kingdoms which followed one another the Myanmar between XIVère in XIXère century: those often had (but not exclusively) the town of Ava like capital.

History

One period of instability had followed the fall of the Royaume of Pagan in front of Mongolian in 1287. The Burmese capital had been transferred to Sagaing. At the beginning of XIVère century, Sagaing was taken by the Shan S and the court decided to be installed on a less vulnerable site, on the other side of the Irrawaddy. In 1364 the king Thadominbya based the new city with the confluence of this river and the Myitnge, on an artificial island created by digging a channel between the two.

The Kingdom of Ava restores the Burmese power, revitalized the culture of the Kingdom of Pagan and opened one period ostentation of the Burmese Littérature. Border lack easy to defend, it was perpetually in war with Shans in the East and at the border with the current Yunnan. Shans launched many raids against the capital, which sent many forwardings against the principalities of north like Mong Mao. The Dynastie Ming on several occasions tried to put a term at these confrontations by the diplomacy. The Kingdom of Ava was even implied in wars between Thai and Chinese in Yunnan between 1436 and 1449.

In 1527, the prince Shan of Thibaw Sao Khun Mong took Ava, which put a term at the dynasty. Many Burmeses took refuge with Taungû, where they took part in the rise of the Dynastie Taungû and in the creation of the Second Burmese Empire.
