Kilkenny

Kilkenny (in Irish ltr ga 'Lash Chainnigh ) is a medieval city of: 8594 inhabitants (2002) of the Irish Republic on the Nore located at 150  km in the south-west of Dublin.

History

Kilkenny was founded at the 6th century around a monastery rested by Canice saint who left his name to the city ( ltr ga Lash Chainnigh in Gaelic). During the the Middle Ages, Kilkenny becomes the seat of the English Parliament. In 1366, in order to avoid the assimilation of the descendants of the first colonists Anglo-Norman and fearing for his capacity on the island, the king of England adopts the Statuts of Kilkenny which prohibit to the English the marriage with the natives as well as the practice of their language and their habits.

Tourism

Its lanes and medieval houses admirably preserved like its Cathedral Saint-Canice and his Castle, built between 1192 and 1207 by William de Clare and located in the middle of a park, make of Kilkenny a high place of Irish tourism. It is also in Kilkenny that is brewed the Bière same name by the oldest brewery of Ireland, Smithwick' S, installed on the site of the Saint-Francis abbey.

Anecdote

The famous counterpart of the serial South Park “They killed Kenny” comes from the Kilkenny beer, indeed one of the authors of the series bet with the others that it would manage to put the name of this beer in each episode. However in English that gives ltr in They killed Kenny .
