Kilian Stobæus

Kilian Stobæus , known as old the to distinguish it from its distant cousin the obstetrician Kilian Stobæus the young person (1717-1792), is a Médecin and Naturaliste Swedish, born with Vinslöv (province of Scanie) the February 6th 1690, married with Florentina Schubert in 1725, and deceased the February 17th 1742. He is also the nephew of the poet Andreas Stobæus (1642-1714).

After studies with the University of Lund, Kilian Stobæus joined the Swedish military navy as doctor assisting between 1710 and 1713. It returns then to Lund to finish its studies of medicine there and becomes there Doctor of medicine in 1721. It then leaves to exert medicine with Gothenburg, in 1724, then with Malmö, starting from 1725. The University of Lund creates for him a Chaire of Philosophie, Natural history and experimental Physique that it occupies starting from 1728. It obtains there then the pulpit of Histoire, in 1732, and remains the holder until his death about it, in 1742. Carl von Linné (1707-1778) and the Nile Rosén von Rosenstein (1706-1773) will belong to its pupils.

The principal writings of Kilian Stobæus were gathered after its death and were published in Dantzig in 1752, under the title Stobæi opuscula .

Stobæus constituted of rich person collections, in particular in Natural history, Archéologie and Numismatique and made gift at the University of Lund in 1735. An inventory of these collections, carried out one year after its death, shows that they comprised, inter alia, 44 fish specimens, 14 of tortoises, 2 of snakes, 3 of crocodiles and 23 of birds.
