Kikinda

Kikinda , in Serb Cyrillic Sr Кикинда, in Hungarian Sr Nagykikinda, Rumanian ro Chichinda Pond and in Ruthène pannonien Кикинда, is a city and a municipality of Serbia located in the autonomous province of Voïvodine. The town of Kikinda is the administrative center of the district of the septentrional Banat. In 2002, it counted: 41935 inhabitants and the municipality of which it is the center: 67002.

The name of the city

The city is mentioned for the first time at the 15th century under the name of Kokenyd. The current name appears on a chart in 1718. It could come from a Hungarian word indicating a plant called " kokeny" and of an old Slavic root meaning the " tête".

History

The modern history of Kikinda can be recalled as from the years 1751 - 1753, at the time where the locality was established who exists still today. The November 12th 1774, the empress of Austria Marie-Therese, by a charter granting of the privileges, formed the district of Velikokindski, with its seat with Kikinda.

In 1848 - 1849, Kinkinda belongs to the Voïvodine, an autonomous province inside the Empire Austro-Hungarian.

Between 1849 and 1860, Kikinda belonged to Voïvodine and Banat de Tamiš. In 1876, the district of Velikokindski was removed and the city concerned the direct authority of the county of Torontal, which had like administrative center the town of Veliki Bečkerek (today Zrenjanin).

With the census of 1910, Kinkinda counted: 26795 inhabitants, of which: 5968 spoke Hungarian and: 5855 spoke German.

In 1941, Kikinda was occupied by the powers of the Axis and was integrated in the autonomous region of the Banat. The city was released the October 6th 1944 and it then formed part of the province of Voïvodine, autonomous region within the socialist news Federal republic of Yugoslavia.

Churches

  • the church Saint Nicolas is located on the central place of Kikinda. It was built in 1773. The icons which it contain are due to the painter Teodor Ilić Češljar.
  • the Catholic church was started in 1808 and was completed in 1811.

Culture

The National museum of Kikinda

Located on the central place of the city, the National museum of Kikinda is installed in a building built in 1839; this building sheltered the first curia of the city, then the government of the District of Velikokikindski until its dissolution in 1876. In 1946, the National museum of Kikinda and the Files of Kikinda were founded and installed in the building. The Museum presents a great number of objects exposed in four departments: archeology, history, ethnology and natural science. It preserves a skeleton of Mammouth, discovered with the site of the briquettery of the city in 1996.

The National library Jovan Popović

The Bibiothèque main road Jovan Popović was created in of 1845. In 1952, it took the name of Jovan Popović , in the honor of an eminent poet of Kikinda. In addition to its function of loan of books, the library organizes literary meetings, promotions of books, seminars, conferences, exposures. It also published several works.

The National theater

Even if the National theater of Kikinda were founded about fifty years ago, the city has in fact a theatrical long tradition: the city knew its first representation in 1796, with a part in German. The first part into Serb was played in 1834. Representations are given throughout the year and, the summer, the scene is installed in the gardens.
